Designing Homes for How Alaskans Actually Live

Alaskans are one of a kind. You don’t proudly endure months of winter, weeks of breakup and a rainy summer if you’re not someone special. Alaskans know every obstacle is worth the epic summers, backcountry powder days and fishing trips where you hook a salmon every cast. Alaskans are built differently. Their homes should be too.

From high winds to earthquakes and darkness to below zero temperatures, Alaska homes not only need to withstand the weather, they must also live up to life on the Last Frontier. Here are some home design elements that help Alaskans live life to the fullest.

Make Room for the Mudroom

Alaskans value functionality. That’s why Xtratufs and Carhartts never go out of style. Whether it’s wiggling out of dirty waders or shedding snowmachine gear, mudrooms isolate the gear explosion that comes with Alaska adventures. A well-designed mudroom has durable flooring and plenty of storage space. Benches make it easy to kick off muddy boots while rows of hooks organize the backpacks and duffels full of school and kids sporting gear. Mudrooms are a transitional space that increases storage and enhances daily efficiencies.

Invest in Energy-Efficient Windows

A window doesn’t just frame your view; it plays a major role in your home’s comfort. Some windows can account for one-third of a home’s energy use. Inefficient and poorly sealed windows are a significant source of heat loss. Installing energy-efficient windows will save you energy and money. Alaska homes should have multi-pane windows with Low-E coatings, insulating inert gas and high-performance frames. So while they might just look like windows, they’re actually a look into major savings.

Enjoy Extra-Large Garages

Alaska is big. For many, Alaska adventure involves big toys like RVs, boats, campers, four-wheelers, snowmachines and side-by-sides, just to name a few. But gear requires a place to put it. Sun, wind and moisture can ruin vehicles and equipment. Alaskans crave extra-large and tall garages. Some want covered carports in addition to garages. In Alaska, extra storage means a lot of fun.

Enhanced Outdoor Living

Alaskans love the outdoors but Mother Nature doesn’t always make it pleasant to enjoy. Building an outdoor oasis at home can get you outside every day. A covered patio helps Alaskans enjoy summer and grill outside even on a rainy day. A hot tub on the porch is the perfect way to take in the Northern Lights in the dead of winter.

These types of Alaska-specific features add longevity and value to your home. But more importantly, they help Alaskans make the most of life on the Last Frontier.
