Homeownership has felt like a roller coaster ride for the past 20 years. In 2008, the housing crash led to a roughly 30% decline in home prices along with millions of foreclosures. In 2020, the 30-year fixed mortgage rate fell to below 3%, the lowest on record, making it an excellent time to become a homeowner. Today, many homeowners are facing an availability crisis due to the lack of inventory, elevated mortgage rates and much higher home prices.

Through all the highs and lows, Dr. Robert Dietz has been at the forefront of housing economics, providing trusted analysis and forecasting for the industry. Dietz is the chief economist and senior vice
president for economics and housing policy for the National Association of Home Builders. In his role at
NAHB, he’s responsible for housing market analysis, housing policy research, economic forecasting and industry surveys.
The housing market isn’t easy to forecast. It’s influenced by many complicated interconnected factors. Dietz analyzes these relationships systematically to come up with a complete picture. He shares his insights across the country. He’s published academic research on the private and social benefits of homeownership, federal tax expenditure estimation, and other housing and tax issues in several peer-reviewed journals.

For the past several years, Dietz has also brought his unique wealth of knowledge to Alaska for the Anchorage Home Builders Association’s annual Housing Summit. Not only does he provide information about the national housing economy, Dietz also provides a detailed analysis of Alaska including the key challenges impacting homebuilding and real estate.
Even if you’re not a homeowner, Alaska’s housing industry affects everyone. The forecast is important for all Alaskans to understand, not just members of the homebuilding industry. Dietz frequently addresses issues like interest rates, housing supply, government policy, population and migration, employment and wages, and more. Dietz will be joined by community leaders and local industry experts who will provide additional information.
If you live, work or play in Anchorage, understanding the housing forecast will help you make smart decisions for your business and family.
