Americans are spending more time at home than ever before. On an average day in 2023, Americans spent roughly 18 hours per day at home, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics American Time Use Survey. This is nearly two hours more per day than pre-pandemic. Families are preparing meals and many are now working, exercising, banking and even attending religious ceremonies virtually from the comfort of their home.
Lifestyles have changed. If you’re going to spend 75% of your life at home, Colony Design + Build believes your home should reflect you. Founders Bill and Tami Taylor have spent 40-plus years creating custom homes for Alaskans. A custom home is designed specifically for your family’s needs, style and future plans. "Our custom homes give homeowners greater control over the layout, finishes, energy efficiency and overall functionality of the home," says Bill Taylor.
Colony Design + Build is in the business of building homes to last and thrive in the rugged beauty of the Last Frontier. Energy efficiency and durable building materials are a priority. But it’s not just about the construction, design is equally as important for enjoyment and long-term value. Most Alaskans want mudrooms, large windows and layouts that maximize views without sacrificing efficiency. This is where design comes in.
In order to provide a greater level of design service to homeowners, Colony Design + Build is one of very few builders in Alaska to have an in-house architect. And it’s not just any architect, it’s Patrick Taylor, son of Bill and Tami Taylor. From walking around the jobsites with his parents as a young child, to working as a general laborer during the summers, Patrick Taylor has always been a part of Colony Design + Build. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon and worked at architectural firms in Oregon and Anchorage before eventually joining the family business.
“Patrick's construction background gives him an understanding of how homes are built, allowing him to design spaces that are both practical and buildable,” Bill Taylor says.
Having an in-house, licensed architect provides seamless, personalized design. It improves communication, speeds up decision making and ensures that the design aligns with the homeowner’s vision and the realities of construction.
“Patrick takes the time to understand each homeowner's goals, preferences and lifestyle. By
building trust and maintaining open communication, he creates a collaborative design experience,” Tami Taylor says.
As a born-and-raised Alaskan, Patrick Taylor knows the unique challenges that face architects in Alaska. He understands the attention to detail required when designing for energy efficiency, snow loads, site conditions and maximizing natural light.
Patrick Taylor isn’t the only long-time member of the team making a big difference. Jason Billman, project manager/superintendent, has been with Colony Design + Build for over 20 years. He started as a trim carpenter and quickly earned leadership positions due to his commitment and hard work. As an invaluable member of the team who’s contributed to the company’s growth and success, the Taylors recently decided to make him a partner in the business.
“Bringing Jason on as a partner was a natural progression. His dedication, knowledge and long-
term investment in the company made him an ideal choice to help lead its future,” Bill Taylor says. “Jason brings hands-on experience, strong leadership skills, attention to detail and a deep understanding of both the construction process and customer relationships.”
For more than 800 homes, Colony Design + Build has been redesigning the Anchorage landscape through thoughtful design and exceptional craftsmanship. As the company continues to grow their values remain the same. Colony Design + Build remains committed to quality and personalized service. The company’s goal is to continue to build exceptional custom homes and lasting relationships with the homeowners.
