The Shoebox Program is the Associate Council’s most popular annual event. Members fill backpacks with Christmas gifts for Anchorage children who are less fortunate during the holidays. Dozens of volunteers gather for the annual stuffing party, where they assemble the backpacks and add basic hygiene items to each like a winter hat, pair of gloves, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and soap. School nurses pick up the packs the following day and distribute them to the children prior to their holiday break. The program has graduated from shoeboxes to backpacks and grown from 40 to 1,500 children sponsored.
