The Anchorage Home Builders Association is the leading voice for the residential building industry in Anchorage, Alaska. AHBA is dedicated to preserving and promoting the American Dream of homeownership. Our core mission is multifaceted: we relentlessly advocate for quality development, champion sustainable housing practices and work tirelessly to ensure robust consumer protection within the housing market.
Advocacy And Leadership in Housing
The current housing crisis in the Municipality of Anchorage serves as the urgent foundation of our advocacy efforts. AHBA actively seeks solutions to increase housing inventory, improve affordability and streamline the construction process.
Our association is governed by a diverse and highly engaged board of directors, which represents a wide spectrum of industry professionals. This collaborative body includes builders, lenders, electricians, engineers and many others, all coming together with a shared purpose: to present a unified vision and voice on housing issues to our local community and governmental bodies.
A key component of our governmental affairs work is the Builders Council. This influential body meets monthly with representatives from the Municipality of Anchorage to engage in constructive dialogue. The council's primary focus is to review and provide expert feedback on building codes, zoning regulations and the permitting processes. The goal of this continuous engagement is to identify areas where these procedures can be revised and simplified, ultimately reducing the cost and time of construction, which directly benefits future homeowners and residents in the long run.
Commitment to Ethical Standards and Education
Beyond advocacy, AHBA is deeply committed to upholding high ethical standards across the entire residential building sector. We invest significantly in educational outreach, not only for our members—ensuring they remain current with best practices, regulatory changes and innovative building technologies—but also for the greater Anchorage community, providing essential insight into the complexities and value of the building industry.

Investing in Community and Workforce Development
AHBA believes that a strong community is the foundation of a strong housing market. We reach our community through multiple initiatives designed to have a tangible, positive impact on the lives of current and future leaders:
Shoebox Program: We proudly partner with the Anchorage School District to provide Christmas gifts to over 1,000 children across our community, spreading joy and supporting families during the holiday season.
Youth Apprenticeships and Scholarships: Through a strong partnership with the Anchorage School District, we offer high school students invaluable opportunities to apprentice directly with our skilled member companies. These students receive hands-on training, mentorship and scholarship stipends to encourage their early engagement with the trades.
Workforce Development and AK Trades Scholarship Program: We’re strategically targeting the next generation of tradesmen and women. Recognizing the critical need for a skilled labor force, our robust workforce development program includes the AK Trades Scholarship Program. This initiative provides essential financial support and resources to students who are pursuing careers in the vital construction industry, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of talent for Anchorage’s future.
AHBA is the unified, authoritative voice for residential building in our region. We invite all industry stakeholders, community leaders and concerned citizens to join our cause. By expanding our membership, we amplify the voices that support common-sense residential building policies, not just in our community, but across Alaska and the nation.
