‘Tis the Season to Spread Holiday Cheer to Thousands of Anchorage Children

The holiday season should be filled with warmth, everlasting joy and gratitude. For many, this is the most wonderful time of the year, but unfortunately that’s not happening for everyone this season. Many children across Anchorage are experiencing homelessness which means their trees will be empty on Christmas morning.

The Anchorage Home Builders Association’s Annual Shoebox Program ensures over 1,200 children have at least one gift to open. AHBA works with the elementary schools in the Anchorage School District to identify children in need. The children range from 4 to 13 years of age.

In December AHBA will hold a backpack stuffing party where teams of volunteers fill more than 500 backpacks with clothing, hygiene items and of course toys. ASD picks up the backpacks the following day and distributes them to the families before holiday break.

AHBA has been involved in the Shoebox Program since 2002. This program would not be possible without the generosity of our members and community partners. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive in helping make Christmas a little brighter for children across Anchorage.
